Hello! My name is Jena Van Gerwen and I am a first-year MENV student in the Sustainability Planning and Management Specialization (now known as Urban Resilience and Sustainability); however, given the flexibility of the MENV program, I have also been able to take a variety of courses that align with the Sustainability in the Outdoor Industry Specialization. I received my undergraduate degree in Environmental Management and Protection, with minors in GIS and Botany, from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo back in 2019. Prior to Graduate School, I spent a few months traveling alone through Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. The global perspectives and independence I gained through this experience have helped shape who I am now and have guided me towards a path I have paved for myself in MENV. Today, I am focussing my studies on the benefits of an outdoor recreation economy, open space and public lands, and how to make these areas more accessible and equitable for marginalized communities. My hobbies include hiking, camping, playing the ukulele, bouldering, and playing with animals! If you ever see me around, please don’t hesitate to say hello!
