Dr. Old is interested in the signaling networks that regulate cell growth and communication in multicellular organisms, and how defects in these networks drive cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders. His lab is developing advanced mass spectrometry methods and computational approaches to rapidly determine the mechanism by which drugs and genetic perturbations affect cellular behavior. Patient derived induced pluripotent stem cells can now be grown in the lab into neuronal tissue, or cerebral organoids, that recapitulate many of the key cellular features in the developing human brain, and even aspects of human genetic disorders that affect brain development. Dr. Old’s lab is using these cerebral organoid models to answer the fundamental question of how an extra copy of chromosome 21 causes dramatic alterations in brain development in individuals with Down syndrome.
