Weekly News & Events - July 12, 2021

ECO Recycling Tip From CU Green Labs:

Equipment such as water baths, ovens, and heat blocks maintain certain temperatures, even when not in use, resulting in high energy consumption. Turning off these types of equipment can save a significant amount of energy, up to 10 kWh/day. Timers are a great option to make this process automatic, and these are available for FREE through Green Labs.

Looking Ahead:

July 19-30, 2021 – Annual DnA (Dowell and Allen) Lab Short-Read Sequencing Workshop:

  • Attendance is FREE!

  • Classes 9AM-12PM Monday through Friday in the JSCBB building at CU Boulder (CU Boulder East Campus)

  • You must wear a mask, even if vaccinated. We will adhere to campus COVID policies and social distancing.

  • Homework study sessions will be from 1-3PM each day, during which time you can talk to a lab member for assistance.

  • This class is geared towards people who have little to no Linux/command-line experience. We will NOT teach you everything you would learn in a 4-year bioinformatics degree. We will teach you basic commands you need to analyze RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and single-cell RNA-seq and, we will teach you how to find help when analyzing data.

  • You will need to bring a laptop to class.

  • You should NOT register if you cannot attend EVERY class. If you wish to attend, you must register for an Eventbrite ticket: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2021-dna-lab-short-read-anaysis-workshop-tickets-156734887267?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

  • The class is open to anyone (regardless of where they are employed). However, because of COVID policy, only 40 people may attend this year. Therefore, we reserve the right to limit the number of people per lab if we reach maximum capacity. If we must limit attendees, we will contact both the PI and researchers via email. The PI will make the final decision on which lab members will attend.

July 21, 2021 – Postdoc Fellowship Session: Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation:

  • 10:00-11:00AM

  • Registration Required: https://cuboulder.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMoce-rrDwiGdRSAtrZeZYh5NhwSlEfsNro

  • Postdocs, graduate students and their advisors are invited to a special opportunity to meet Dr. Anja Armarche, Science Officer at the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, who will lead a webinar on the foundation’s fellowship programs.

  • In addition, Dr. Sabrina Spencer, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, recipient of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Fellowship and recipient of the 2021 Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award, will provide perspective on how this support has influenced her training and scientific career.

  • The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation funds high-risk, high-reward cancer research and strives to enable young scientists who are brilliant, brave and bold enough to go where others haven’t.

  • This webinar will focus on the Damon Runyon Fellowship Award (due August 16), the Damon Runyon Quantitative Biology Fellowship Award, and the Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award.

  • Please visit the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation website to learn more about these opportunities and come prepared with any questions.
