Notes:jThe Arapaho got the substance they needed to make blue paint here. This paint was used in ceremonies such as the Sun Dance, when actions are performed that have any connection with the supernatural, for decoration, and in general to express happiness or wish for happiness. Mourners don't paint their faces. Women would paint streaks down their faces, on their cheeks, forehead and nose to signify war.
