Media Cataloging Coordinator - 11539
Reporting to the Special Materials Cataloger, the Media Cataloging Coordinator performs original and complex copy cataloging of audiovisual materials and other materials in a variety of formats. This role oversees the media cataloging operations within the unit and sets media cataloging priorities, workflow, division of tasks, and assigns ongoing and future project work.
The Coordinator provides training, documentation, and communication of national rules and standards related to media cataloging and works with others to determine local cataloging policies. The Coordinator organizes the media cataloging work in collaboration with other staff members and solves cataloging problems.

What your key responsibilities will be:
- Performs original and complex copy cataloging for audiovisual materials in various languages and subject disciplines.
- Applies local and international cataloging standards in cataloging audiovisual materials in various formats, including the standards for the interpretation and creation of authority records.
- Consults with the Special Materials Cataloger or other professional catalogers concerning bibliographic and authority complexities.
- Resolves cataloging issues, including interpretation of authority records, classification numbers, and subject headings. Solves problems by analyzing OCLC bibliographic and authority records and Sierra records and consulting a variety of print and online cataloging standards and reference sources.
- Advises on, revises, and approves the work of copy catalogers.
- Verifies forms of access points under authority control (personal, corporate, conference, and geographic names; subject headings; uniform titles; series headings).
Procedures & Instruction
- Updates media cataloging procedures manuals with current standard practices and prescribes their applications.
- Establishes, maintains, and reviews procedures in light of the overall goals of the Libraries and the Department according to the role and capabilities of the Monographic and Special Materials Cataloging Unit.
- Discusses the changing technical environment with technicians and librarians in other departments to determine the need for procedural changes and the impact of proposed changes within the whole library. Identifies needs for system enhancement.
- Instructs team members in international cataloging standards, in rule changes, and in local procedural changes.
- Designs group and individualized training materials and hands-on instruction for changed and new procedures for staff within and outside the Department.
- Issues update statements and designs training sessions on enhancements to OCLC Connexion and Innovative Sierra cataloging software.
- May train new faculty members in local copy cataloging practices.
Database File Maintenance
- Performs database maintenance projects, both routine and complex, when necessary to help meet department goals.
- Identifies, analyzes, and reconciles problems and errors in local bibliographic and item records or on library materials.
- Manipulates data in Sierra to upgrade records and correct access points and item records.
- Responds to inquiries from other Libraries departments regarding conflicting information and errors in records.
- May serve on library-wide service committees.
- Attends university supervisory workshops.
- Attends information technology workshops (on topics such as non-print cataloging, online resources, Internet cataloging).
- Keeps updated on revisions in cataloging rules and trends in media cataloging practices. Applies new rules and interpretations as appropriate.
- Provides assistance in understanding and using new technology.
- Proposes professional development to team personnel by encouraging them to attend workshops and library-sponsored presentations and to serve on library committees, and assisting with cross training among other departments.
- May contribute to the department’s national cooperative cataloging efforts as appropriate.

The salary range for this position starts at $45,000.

What we require:
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Two years of original and/or copy cataloging experience using MARC formats, RDA/AACR2 and Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging policy statements, LC Classification, and LC Subject Headings.
- Experience cataloging on OCLC and in an integrated library system.
- Knowledge of at least one non-English language.

- ALA-accredited M.L.S. or equivalent.
- Comprehensive knowledge of cataloging standards.
- Experience in media cataloging (video and audio recordings, film, digital materials, etc.).
- Experience cataloging multiple formats of materials.
- Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces Sierra and OCLC Connexion software.
- Experience creating authority records.
- Experience supervising and/or training cataloging staff, including developing workflows, procedures and documentation.
Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
