Data is amazing for research, but is it always amazing for researchers? This is the question that Sarah Lamdan poses in her talk, “For Love or Money? What Researchers Should Know about Academic Data Cartels.” Lamdan will cover how academic data analytics has the potential to improve our research opportunities, but can also open pitfalls in academics' paths. “By critiquing the data companies that create academic data products, we can envision an academic data future that benefits research and researchers,” said Lamdan.

The talk will be held via Zoom on February 15 at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is required. A Zoom link will be shared with registrants the day before the event.

Lamdan is the author Data Cartels: The Companies That Control and Monopolize Our Information, from which Wired Magazine adapted an article “The Quiet Invasion of Big Data."

Love Data Week is about inspiring your community to use data to bring about changes that matter. This year, we are focused on helping new and seasoned data users find data training and other resources that can help move the needle on the issues they care about.
