You are invited to attend the 2nd annual Culture Crawl on Wednesday, October 19. This campus-wide event will feature activities, performances, games and shows across 14 different CU Boulder cultural heritage sites and groups from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to enter to win a prize package consisting of swag from each of the locations and CU Boulder faculty and staff can stamp their Employee Passport by participating.
Look out for new announcements every week leading up to the crawl, as we highlight each of the stops. Last week, we highlighted the involvement of Media Archeology Lab, Center for African and African American Studies, Heritage Center and Norlin Library in the crawl. This week we move to the other side of campus to highlight B2 Center for Media, Arts and Performance, CU Art Museum, International Film Series, Earth Sciences & Map Library and Fiske Planetarium.
B2 Center for Media, Arts and Performance
The B2 Center for Media, Arts and Performance houses a two-story, 2,700-square-foot Black Box Experimental Studio on the basement level 2 of the Roser ATLAS Center, and regularly presents interdisciplinary performances that co-mingles art, technology, media, science, performance and radical creativity from members of the CU Boulder community.
Participants of the Culture Crawl are invited to visit B2 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to view a short music performance by creative resident and Atlas Ph.D. student, Torin Hopkins in the Black Box Theater. Drift through through the other rooms to also view a showcase of recent work by 2022-23 graduate fellows Sasha De Konick, Andrew Dilallo and Anna Pilot.
CU Art Museum
The CU Art Museum boasts a growing collection of more than 12,500 objects representing the wide range of materials used to create art. Through collections, exhibitions and comprehensive public programming, the museum provides a forum for exchanging ideas, inspiring collaboration and fueling imagination.
Stop by the museum October 19 anytime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make art and see their latest exhibition, “Onward and Upward: Shark's Ink”, a collection that includes editioned prints, production materials and shop correspondence and records from Shark’s Ink. Anyone who finishes the museum’s scavenger hunt can swing by the front desk for a sweet prize.
International Film Series
Established in 1941, the International Film Series is Boulder's first art-house film series and screens over 100 films per year on the CU Boulder campus. Their features include an eclectic mix of genres and filmmakers with the goal of providing variety and affordable cinema to the Boulder population.
During the Culture Crawl on Wednesday, October 19 at 7 p.m., attend a free film screening of THIS IS (NOT) WHO WE ARE in Muenzinger Auditorium. The film explores the gap between Boulder’s self-image and the more complex lived experiences—both historical and contemporary—of its Black community members. Stick around after the screening for an in-person Q&A with the directors, Beret Strong and Katrina Miller.
Earth Sciences & Map Library
Come for the stegosaurus fossil, stay for the extensive collection of materials in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Geology and Physical Geography and over 200,000 interdisciplinary maps.
During the Culture Crawl on October 19 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., join the librarians of the Earth Sciences & Map Library for international chocolate tasting featuring maps that show where your chocolate comes from! Participants can also see the libraries’ strangest maps, enjoy making map and globe crafts, visit the dinosaur origami station, or choose a map or two for your dorm room décor. The current exhibition about glaciers, “Sensing Ice”, is also open for the Culture Crawl and the fall semester.
Fiske Planetarium
Identifiable by its iconic 65-foot diameter silver dome, the Fiske Planetarium offers a diverse range of fulldome films, star talks, live talks, laser fantasy and liquid sky music shows, concerts and theatrical productions.
On October 19, visit Fiske to experience the newest images from the James Webb Space Telescope depicting our universe as it was up to 13 billion years ago. The showing will also share a novel new way of conceptualizing time and the impact our daily lives have on our global community. Showings begin at 3 p.m. with a new show starting on the half hour until 6 p.m.
