The month of April brings with it sunshine, flowers and National Poetry Month. This year, we celebrate the hope that poetry can bring in difficult times for readers and writers alike. That’s why CU Boulder librarians have gathered poetry suggestions that have brought them inspiration, connection and hope.

Throughout the month, you’ll find recommendations on this National Poetry Month guide with links to poetry in the libraries’ collections like these:

  • Amanda Rybin-Koob, literature and humanities librarian, recommends the poem “Characteristics of Life,” by Camille Dungy. Rybin-Koob chose this poem because it captures the graveness of hope and the urgency for climate action. You can find this poem and other works by women climate activists in All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis.
  • Dan Johnston, a teaching and learning specialist, recommends the poem “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by John Donne. Johnston notes notes, “It’s a sad poem, to be sure, but one reminds us of the importance of community and solidarity in challenging times.” You can find this poem and other works by Donne in the anthology John Donne’s Poetry
  • Sarah Hagerman, engagement programming specialist,, recommends Charles Bukowski’s poem, “The Laughing Heart.” Hagerman recommends this Bukowski work because of his “raw and unadorned approach to language.” You can read this poem and others by Charles Bukowski, check out his poetry collection The Laughing Heart.

Do you have a recommendation? Add the title and poet of a poem that brings you hope and inspiration.

Additionally, on the guide, you’ll encounter recommended databases for poetry and literature as well as featured poetry collections.

The guide includes the wonderful collaborative poem written by the CU community in 2020, Exquisite Hope. We invite you to add your voice to this year’s collaborative poem. Join the CU community and contribute to Exquisite Hope Poetry 2021.

Happy National Poetry Month, from the University Libraries!
