Learn about open access publishing through Opentober workshops

The University Libraries and the Center for Research Data & Digital Scholarship (CRDDS) are excited to announce a new educational workshop mini-series for students and researchers interested in learning more about Open Access (OA) publishing.

The mini-series Open Scholarship for Beginners is part of Opentober 2020, a month-long celebration of Open Access that provides remote opportunities for students and researchers to discuss the ways our community can make its scholarship more equitable and more open to the world.

Opentober is an extension of International Open Access Week, an annual event where open access advocates worldwide share with their communities the potential benefits of the publishing model and help inspire wider participation in normalizing open access in scholarship and research.

"The Libraries and CRRDS wanted to offer workshops throughout the month of October in order to provide more opportunities for people to engage with and learn about Open Access,” said Scholarly Communication Librarian Melissa Cantrell.

Opentober Workshop Schedule

For researchers unfamiliar with open access, we recommend registering for Basics of Open Access. In this workshop, you will learn about the benefits of open access and dispel common myths around the publishing model.

Publishing your work open access is an opportunity to amplify your research impact by broadcasting to a significantly broader audience than ever before. In Strategies for Making Your Scholarship Open, you will learn about publishing research to open journals and other forums.

Over the last several years, university presses have experimented with Open Access book publishing in a variety of ways. Tune-in for A University Press Perspective on Open Access from Darrin Pratt, director of University Press of Colorado.

Open Access doesn’t just apply to journals. It touches all aspects of knowledge sharing throughout the research life cycle, regardless of the work’s format. Learn about how professors are engaging with Open Scholarship Beyond the Article.

In the hour-long panel Advancing Open Access: Experiences from Across Campus, researchers from across campus will discuss their experiences with open access research and publishing. Panelists will provide insight into the values of open research, policy, education and more.
