The University Libraries is now accepting submissions for the sixth annual Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library photo contest. Open to graduates and undergraduates alike, this contest serves as a platform for photographers to showcase natural landscapes and environmental scenery.

“It’s important to continue to hold this contest to create a good sense of community in our branch library,” said the Earth Sciences & Map Library Branch Operations and Outreach Manager Brittany Reed. "I think that it is happening through this contest, and through all the other events we host throughout the year."

Reed said the contest judges received over 130 student works to choose from last year. This year, the Library hopes to receive submissions from students in a still wider selection of departments. The intent is engagement from across the broad and diverse community of students the Library serves.

The submission portal opens March 9 and closes April 13 at 11:59 p.m. The winning photograph will be announced May 4, then professionally printed, framed and displayed in the Earth Sciences & Map Library. Top entries will also be displayed in the Library, as well as in the Laughing Goat Cafe in Norlin Library.

Photos will be judged on:

  • Artistic merit, composition and aesthetics
  • How well an Earth feature, process or landscape is captured
  • The short, written description of the photograph (two to three sentences in length) that explains the Earth feature or natural landscape depicted
