Community members are invited to attend a series of events marking and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of United Mexican American Students at the University of Colorado.
Its members have been activists advocating for equal rights, protesting injustices and improving access to education for Chicano and Chicana people, as well as seeking empowerment for all people, among other work. The chapter “works to increase the cultural, social, political, and economic well being of Chicana/os.”
On Thursday, UMAS will screen the film “Symbols of Resistance” at 7 p.m. at the Chautauqua Community House, followed by a panel discussion. The film examines the emergence of the Chicano Movement in the 1970s, particularly in Colorado and northern New Mexico. On Friday, UMAS will show historical exhibits and photo displays at the Center for British and Irish Studies at CU’s Norlin Library starting at 4:30, followed by a presentation at CU’s Temporary Building 1 at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, UMAS will host a celebration of the movement and dance at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center in Denver.
