The Tech Lawyer Accelerator is a partnership between technology companies and Colorado Law to train future leaders in the tech law arena.  The program takes a select group of entrepreneurially-minded law students and provides them with intensive training on what it takes to succeed as a lawyer in the tech industry.

The program begins with a four-week boot camp that focuses on law department economics, legal financial literacy, legal process management and automation, and contracting. Each module features technology training, presentations by industry executives, a team exercise, and student team presentations to a panel of executives. At the end of the boot camp, students can expect to understand the lexicon of the tech industry, along with basic principles in project management, finance, technology, and contract drafting.

Following the boot camp, students participate in paid internships with tech companies ranging from 10 weeks to seven months.  The companies range from well-funded startups to Fortune 100s and are located in Colorado and Silicon Valley.  The internships provide the students with experience as in-house counsel and allow them to perform a variety of projects that add value to their employers.

Projects handled by students in 2014 included:

  • Helping legal, finance, and other executives develop templates, guidelines, playbooks, etc., that streamlined the contracting process and/or allowed other tasks to be handled more efficiently
  • Performing standard junior lawyer/contract manager tasks, including contract drafting, redlining, summarizing and negotiating
  • Performing various types of legal research in the fields of intellectual property, international law, contract law, employment law, consumer law, and privacy law, among others
  • Working on trademark applications
  • Working on international mergers and acquisitions
  • Assisting a company in the process of filing its S-1 and going public
  • Shadowing General Counsel in various types of negotiations and meetings
  • Giving legal presentations to business and tech executives, including C-level executives

A significant percentage of the 2014 TLA companies kept their interns on part time after the formal 2014 TLA internship ended and virtually all 2014 TLA companies have signed up to participate in the 2015 program.  A number of the 2014 TLA graduates will be working next year for law firms, including Cooley, Davis Graham & Stubbs, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, and Kendall, Koenig & Oelsner.
