Colorado Law’s Telecommunications Moot Court team finished second in the 16th Annual National Telecommunications Moot Court Competition hosted by Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, on March 27.The team, which included Eric Schmidt ’11, Devin Looijen ’10, and Angela Wade ’11, was narrowly beaten by the team from the University of Wisconsin Law School in a split 2-1 decision."We were thrilled to represent Colorado Law on a national scale and demonstrate the quality of our program in telecommunications and technology law,” said Schmidt. The team argued on behalf of the Federal Communications Commission that federal law preempts a state regulation that bans multiple tiers of broadband service in order to prevent consumer confusion. Looijen and Wade argued that federal statutes on broadband deployment expressly preempted the state regulation, and Schmidt argued that federal child protection statutes, among others, implicitly preempt the state regulations.Professor Brad Bernthal coached the team to the second place finish, which ties for the best result in Colorado Law’s history.
