Do I have to be Jewish to be part of Jewish Studies?

NO!

Jewish Studies is an academic program open to all students of all backgrounds! Our current student body is comprised of both Jewish and non-Jewish students.

Our program prides itself on creating a small, diverse community that engages Jewish history, culture, and religion as lens through which to explore the world.

I need to get a job after graduation. Why should I major or minor in Jewish Studies?

Contrary to popular opinion, the Program in Jewish Studies believes that a strong liberal arts education can be the foundation for building hirable global citizens.

The Program in Jewish Studies has 100% placement rate for our graduated Majors in jobs that fulfill their passions. Our Majors and Minors have gone onto meaningful jobs in non-profit organizations, Wall Street, law, business, and education while others have decied to pursue graduate school both nationally and internationally.

How do we do it?

Our program is specifically designed to provide our students with the professional development skills they need in the working world.

All of our Majors are required to complete a Capstone Project, a summation of their Jewish Studies learning. This project is a tangible product our students can show to a potential employer.

We offer a unique Internship in Jewish Studies course, providing students with professional work experience before they go on the job market. Uniquely, this class combines students' work at their internship sites with a class which explores leadership and workplace skills through a Jewish learning lens.

Our Jewish Studies Undergraduate Student Advisory Board is a student group comprised of Majors and Minors who want to make a difference in Jewish Studies. Serving as our student voice, board members gain the experience of developing programs and events, corresponding with faculty and donors, and working as a team, invaluable skills for the working world.

We highly encourage international travel, and currently offer two Global Seminars to help students get abroad while earning class credit!

Do any Jewish Studies classes count for Core Curriculum requirements?

Yes!

In fact, because so many of our classes cover core curriculum, many students are able to fulfill a Minor in Jewish Studies while working on their core requirements. Visit our Core Curriculum page for a list of what Jewish Studies classes count for core.

I'm already majoring in another department. Why should I add a Jewish Studies Major or Minor?

One of the best things about Jewish Studies is that we are inherently interdisciplinary. Most of our classes are cross-listed with other departments so that our students can fulfill multiple requirements at once.

Many of our current and past students have double majored or minored in Jewish Studies and another department:

  • International Affairs
  • Religious Studies
  • Studio Art
  • Communication
  • History
  • Pre-Education
  • Political Science
  • Anthropology
  • Sociology
  • Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures
  • Theater
  • Women and Gender Studies
  • Business
