Policies for Friendship Families

  1. No smoking. In the past it was difficult to match students and families who smoked so this will simplify things. Please don't smoke while you're spending time with your student unless it's ok with both parties.
  2. Never lend/borrow money. This is never a good idea, just avoid getting into this situation.
  3. Never give legal or academic advice. University of Colorado has professionals who are equipped to handle questions on these topics. Please call International Student and Scholar Services at (303) 492-8057. The office can handle questions regarding visas, accidents, legal matters, insurance etc.
  4. Don't proselytize religion or politics. Please feel free to share your religious and political beliefs, but don't do so in a way in which you are trying to persuade others to convert to your beliefs.
  5. We match single-member households with a student of the same gender.
  6. We match based on common interests. We will do our best to accommodate any special requests, but we can not make any guarantees.”
  7. Many families will request students who speak a certain language or come from a certain country. Please keep in mind that students may not be interested in being matched with someone who speaks their native language.  This is not always in the best interest of the student.
  8. Try to contact your student within a week of being matched.
  9. Please be aware that some students don't consume alcohol, pork, or other items for religious reasons. Please make sure to ask your student about any dietary restrictions.
  10. Many students come from cultures where having certain types of pets is very strange. If you have a pet and plan on having your student over for a meal please make sure they are ok with being around them.  It can be intimidating for students to be around dogs or cats.
  11. If there is ever an issue please don't hesitate to contact the BFIS Coordinator.
