New Department of State (DOS) guidance allows undergraduate and pre-doctoral degree-seeking college and university students in J-1 status who are pursuing or have recently completed STEM-related studies to apply for an academic training extension of up to 36 months in total or the period of their full course of study in the United States, whichever is less (inclusive of any prior academic training).
- This initiative is temporary and applies to 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.
- Non-degree seeking students are not eligible to apply.
- Academic training must begin no later than 30 days after completion of the STEM-related degree program.
ISSS will update its website with the extension request process in the coming days.
