CU Boulder campus

VC's corner

David Kang

Advancing the public good

Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,

I want to compliment all of you for your work to help make residence hall move-in and the first week of classes a positive experience for our campus community. The students’ return adds a vibrancy to the campus and gives us another reminder of why we’re here -- to further the public good through the university’s mission of education and research.

I know many of you have followed the progress of, and engaged in, Academic Futures the past two years. I want to highlight the campus’s update on the rollout of the Academic Futures implementation phase and offer a little perspective on how our work in I&S supports these efforts.

You can read in detail about the nine priority Academic Futures themes and projects being advanced in Tuesday’s edition of CU Boulder Today. While at first glance, Campus Success: Physical Resources might seem to be the only area relevant to our work, the work we do will provide support for all of the other priority themes and projects as well and help ensure that each is successful.

Strategic Facilities Visioning has wrapped up its Scenario Planning phase, which identified several spatial components and strategies necessary to achieve university strategic goals. These key findings are helping drive development of the facilities planning tool that will be the final output of Strategic Facilities Visioning this fall. This data-rich tool will help our campus leadership make the most impactful infrastructure investment decisions in support of the campus mission for decades to come.

As we look to the future with our housing, transportation, energy and campus master plans, we’ll be planning for and maintaining spaces that speak to each of the Academic Futures priority themes and projects. Among them: creating a common student-centered approach to teaching and learning; spaces that foster interdisciplinary teaching and research; spaces that empower teaching and technology, online and distance education; and spaces that sustain, support and inspire our community.

Ultimately, our charge as an organization is to create and maintain infrastructure that, in addition to being sustainable and resilient, also best advances these priority themes and projects. I encourage all of you to tune in to this implementation phase of Academic Futures and to start thinking about your work through the lens of how we can help advance the campus mission of furthering the public good.

Sincerely,
David Kang, vice chancellor for infrastructure and sustainability

News and notes

Aerospace ribbon cutting

2 new campus buildings open

Campus celebrated the opening of two new buildings in August, the 178,294-square-foot Aerospace Engineering Sciences Building on East Campus and the 705-bed Williams Village East residence hall. These were two major undertakings, with both completed on time for the fall semester. Kudos to everyone from Infrastructure and Sustainability whose work helped make these projects successful! And, in case you missed it, Aerospace enjoyed a special blast-off.

East District Energy Plant

EDEP open house for I&S staff

Utility and Energy Services is teaming up with the Infrastructure and Sustainability Inclusive Excellence Committee (ISIEC) to host an open house for I&S staff at the East District Energy Plant on Main Campus. Come meet Utility and Energy Services staff and learn more about the facility that provides heating and cooling for much of the Main Campus. The event is Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All I&S staff are welcome to attend. Hot dogs and refreshments will be served. There are also a limited number spots available for building tours, which must be reserved via online registration. For more information, contact Kelsey Draper at kelsey.draper@colorado.edu.

Employee spotlight

Jessica Bradley

Jessica Bradley, assistant director, Campus Building Services

How long have you been working at CU?
I have worked at CU for over 18 years and I attended college here.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I really love the mountains and I try to go camping at least three times a year. The western slope is my favorite place to go – it is worth the drive.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you?
Some of you may not know that I am an earth science geek, aka: rock nerd. I am especially fond of the gems and minerals you can find all over Colorado. I am fascinated with how the different rock types were created eons ago compared to what the landscape looks like now.

What do you love about CU Boulder?
What I love most about CU Boulder is how many people I have interacted with and became friends with over the years. There are so many life experiences people share. There is always someone you can relate with in some way or another.

What is your favorite type of music?
I don’t have a favorite – I listen to all types of music. It really depends on my mood. I am fond of music from the 60’s, 70’s, even a little bit from the 80’s to current bands. I just attended the Weird Al concert at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony.

Cyclists on campus

Featured perk

The 10-day forecast includes exactly zero days in the 90s, which means fall is right around the corner and it’s prime time for making biking your mode of travel for traversing campus. Did you know that single-speed Buff Bikes are available for employees to rent for 48 hours at a time at the campus bike stations? For those looking for something more permanent, meanwhile, the annual CU Bike Fest used bike sale provides a chance to pick up a quality used bike for $100 or $160. And don’t forget that CU Boulder staff can score an annual B-Cycle membership for just $40.

Stars in the sky
