Reflecting on your great work

Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,

I hope this note finds you rested and recharged from the holiday weekend. I know that for me the long weekend provided an opportunity to reflect on the amazing work you have been doing to support the university’s implementation of the Road Map to Fall 2020 plan. The sentiment I continue to hear from our campus partners is that the work we’re doing in Infrastructure and Sustainability is extremely important, appreciated and being executed well.

Of course, much of this work continues to happen from home for many of you, which presents its own sets of challenges -- as well as some rewards. I wanted to take a moment today to highlight the efforts of some of our groups that have been working on-campus to support our campus mission.

Our Distribution Center team, for one, has gone above and beyond in recent weeks supporting the return to campus of researchers that began in late May. The team has played an integral role procuring and processing large quantities of supplies and equipment, and will continue to be crucial to campus’s safe return to in-person learning in the fall.

Our custodial and trades groups, many of whom remained on campus even during the height of the government stay-at-home order, continue to keep our campus spaces clean, disinfected, safe and functioning at a high level.

From Utility and Energy Services to Outdoor Services to our project managers, planners and inspectors, I know these on-campus efforts have not been easy during this time due to new safety and social distancing requirements that have changed the way many of you must carry out even the simplest of tasks. I want you to know your dedication and resilience during this time has been truly inspiring.

I encourage everyone to continue to tune into the weekly Road Map to Fall 2020 implementation team updates posted each Thursday in CU Boulder Today. They provide snapshots of the milestones that we’re achieving not only in Infrastructure and Sustainability but also across our campus as we work collectively to set the stage for a successful fall semester. As a reminder, facilities-specific updates are also on our Infrastructure and Sustainability website. It is amazing the collaboration that is occurring and the progress that is being made in such a short amount of time. I cannot thank you enough for all of your efforts.

With gratitude,

David Kang, vice chancellor for infrastructure and sustainability

News and notes

Staff can now select a preferred name

University of Colorado faculty and staff who would rather be referred to by a nickname, professional name, anglicized name or a name that aligns with their gender identity can now select a preferred name using the employee portal.

CU offers pre-tax option for parking permits

CU System Employee Services announced that parking fees can now be deducted pre-tax. This change, which results in a small tax savings for most people, will affect the employee’s parking deductions beginning with the first paycheck issued after July 1. If you still want your fees to be deducted ‘post tax,’ you must complete a Post-tax request form on or before Friday, July 10.

Parking permits for staff

Staff who won’t be using their parking permits for the fall semester should put their permits on hold or cancel them to allow others the opportunity to park on campus. If your permit is already on hold and you plan to use your permit for the 2020 fall semester, you must reactivate your permit by Friday, July 10 by completing/submitting the Take My Parking Permit Off Hold form. Permits remaining on hold after July 10, 2020 will remain on hold for the duration of the 2020 fall semester. Read more about parking permits for staff.

New replacement schedule for laptop computers

As part of the campus budget reduction scenarios developed in May, I&S Desktop Support recommended that the division begin replacing laptop computers on a four-year cycle rather than every three years. This new frequency, which went into effect on July 1, is consistent with the replacement cycle for desktop computers. The primary reason for replacing laptops at three years has been battery life, but battery technology has improved significantly since the previous replacement schedule was put into effect. Desktop Support anticipates minimal impact to the department and a positive impact to the environment. An email will be sent to users whose devices were scheduled for replacement this year to advise them of the change. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Jonathan Moore, manager of I&S Desktop Support.

Employee spotlight

Carl Pierce and Chip

Carl Pierce, Recycling and Solid Waste Manager, FM Operations and Services

How long have you been working at CU?
Three years. I started at CU on June 12, 2017.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
My favorite thing to do daily is taking long walks in the Colorado sunshine or at dusk in the fresh dusk air.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
Since moving to Colorado, I purchased a bike, and I enjoy riding my bike around the numerous trails in Boulder and around Colorado.

What do you love about CU Boulder?
The views at CU Boulder are magnificent all year round from the campus, or when you’re driving west on Highway 36 into town, and I love the view of the snow-capped mountains and the spectacular backdrop of the university. People on campus are always friendly and I find myself having a quick chat with people I meet about how wonderful it is at CU and the campus dedication to sustainability.

Are you a die-hard fan of anything?
I am a die-hard Seattle Seahawks fan (sorry Broncos fans).

In memoriam

Jeffery Edwards, custodian, Campus Building Services

We are saddened to share the news that Jeffery Edwards (custodian in our Campus Building Services group) passed away on June 17. Our team has lost a dear friend and valued colleague and he will be missed. Read Jeffery’s obituary.
