Taking care of our people

Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend one of our organizational update sessions in March. I appreciate how engaged our staff is and enjoyed the opportunity to hear what’s on your minds as we work to create an organization that first and foremost takes care of its people while also providing top-notch service. People first. Mission always.

If you were at one of the sessions, you know one of my major themes was the emphasis we are placing on providing professional development opportunities for our staff. As part of that, I alluded to a program our I&S human resources department is piloting to help facilitate such development. For those who weren’t there, as well as those who were, I want to provide some more detail on those efforts.

Essentially, the Individual Development Plan (IDP) program will have staff members expressing in writing goals for themselves in their current positions, as well as longer-term professional aspirations. Individual staff members and their supervisors will then use that as a framework to tailor development plans that include measurable milestones aimed at making progress toward those goals.

The program is being piloted this spring with a pair of small groups as I&S HR works to optimize the logistics. It will then be rolled out to the rest of the Infrastructure and Sustainability organization later this year. I encourage you to keep an eye out for future communication about the rollout.

I’m excited for the IDP program and where we’re headed. As I mentioned during the update sessions, being intentional about our staff members’ professional development simultaneously creates a stronger workforce and broadens the scope of opportunity for our people.

Sincerely,
David Kang, vice chancellor for Infrastructure and Sustainability

News and notes

Troy Muller

Troy Muller advocates for IPM in D.C.

Integrated Pest Manager Troy Muller traveled to Baltimore the week of March 19 for the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Symposium. While there, he and other attendees made a day trip to Washington for IPM Advocacy Day (March 22) to meet with staff for their respective Congressional representatives to discuss the importance of IPM programs and practices in schools. Troy met with top aides for Rep. Diana DeGette and Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado. He informed the group not only about CU Boulder's IPM practices and unique approach to solving pest problems without use of restricted pesticides, but also about the need for IPM programs in more school districts in Colorado, where only 17 districts currently utilize such programs.

Trophy

I&S departments, staffers win sustainability awards

Two Infrastructure and Sustainability departments have won campus sustainability awards, and two I&S individuals have landed special recognition. The awardees will be recognized at the April 25 Campus Sustainability Summit. The annual awards program recognizes outstanding individuals and departments who demonstrate a sincere commitment to transforming the CU Boulder campus into a living laboratory for sustainability. The Distribution Center and the Department of Environmental Health and Safety have both earned departmental achievement awards, while Kayla Adair and Steven Stuart from Campus Building Services have earned special recognition. More details on the awards and photos from the event to come in the May edition. Kudos to our winners!

Waffles and ice cream

Featured perk

That's compared to $12 if you pay with a credit card. Because sometimes you just feel like all-you-can-eat waffles and ice cream for lunch.
