Detailed Biography

Bud Pope is a seasoned entrepreneur with a background in starting and developing science-based commercial companies. Bud has more than 25 years in the natural resource industry and brings technical expertise in remote sensing, geophysics, environmental, and geospatial big data solutions.

Since February 2016, Bud has served as Senior Advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation where he led a range of projects enhancing industry relations opportunities related to CU Boulder’s Grand Challenge initiative. Notable efforts included developing an industry-focused NOAA workshop on “Big Data” with over 40 industry attendees; leadership in cementing a formal agreement with DigitalGlobe for campus-wide access to imagery through Earth Lab; facilitating campus and industry connections in Energy, Water, Mining, Environmental, and Risk; and contributing to a cross-campus team more closely coordinating industry activities.

In 2004, Bud co-founded Spatial Energy, a cloud-based geospatial content business. In 2016, after developing the company into a remote sensing leader for the energy market, he sold the company to DigitalGlobe. Prior to his work with Spatial Energy, Bud served for eight years as president and CEO of Green Mountain Geophysics, the industry leader in 3-D seismic planning and pre-processing software and content. He sold Green Mountain to ION geophysics in 1999.

Bud has held leadership positions in the tech and science industry, spanning everything from startups to Fortune 500 companies, since 1980. A CU alum, Bud started his career at KPMG and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
