GIS Basics ~ Tuesday and Thursday, May 14 and 16, 2013, 10:00-12:00 AM and 1:00-3:00 PM

Location: IBS Computing Lab, Room 150

Teacher: Frank Witmer (Research Associate, Institutions Program, IBS)

This 2-day workshop introduces participants to the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with an emphasis on data acquisition, basic mapping, and simple analysis. Topics include:

  • geographic data formats and sources (e.g. census data, national and international borders)
  • projections, mapping lat/long coordinate data
  • choropleth mapping
  • spatial joins
  • map queries
  • raster data and spatial overlays/joins

We will use ESRI's ArcGIS10 software; no prior experience with GIS is required.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own data sets (e.g. survey data with lat/lon coordinates) with which to work.
