Step 1: Complete the training
- Each employee returning to campus must complete the training titled “CU: COVID-19 Safety and Awareness-CU Boulder” prior to their return. This training can be found in the MyCUinfo Portal by accessing the SkillSoft tile.
Step 2: Monitor Your Health and the Health of Others
- Each day you come to campus, you are expected to self-screen for symptoms and fill out the Health Questionnaire Form. If you are displaying any of the symptoms or feeling ill, you should stay at home, consult with your primary care physician, and notify your supervisor.
- If you become ill or develop symptoms, stay home and notify your supervisor, and fill out the health questionnaire.
- Your supervisor will work with department HR or Employee Relations to make sure appropriate leave is offered.
- If you are concerned that a colleague may be ill, please reach out to your department HR or Employee Relations.
- If you do not fall into the criteria for contact tracing, you are not entitled to know of any positive COVID-19 results.
Step 3: Protect Yourself and Others
The Boulder campus has a new policy regarding COVID-19 Health & Safety. View the COVID-19 Health & Safety policy.
- Wear a mask; it is required
- Stay at least 6 feet from others and do not linger in building public areas
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
- Wash hands frequently and avoid touching your face
- Follow building signs and guidance
- Clean and sanitize your work areas
- Disinfect your work space daily when you arrive and before you leave
- Avoid using or congregating in shared spaces like kitchens and conference rooms
If you are required to return to campus for your position and feel you are unable to do so, please review the resources available to you.
- If you feel you are unable to return to campus for any reason, the below resources may be available to you. Please connect with these resources as soon as possible so you have the support you need prior to your return to work date. Please review carefully:
- If you are caring for a child whose school or place of care is closed, or the childcare provider is unavailable due to COVID-19, you may be eligible for leave. More information can be found on the COVID-19 HR Processes page. You will need to complete the COVID-19 Leave and Accommodation Request Form and email to FMLA@colorado.edu.
- If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and are seeking a medical diagnosis or have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or have been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine because of COVID-19 or you are caring for a family member diagnosed with COVID-19 subject or advised to quarantine or isolation, you should not return to campus at this time. You must be free of ANY symptoms potentially related to COVID-19 before returning to work on campus. If you are experiencing symptoms and seeking leave, please complete the COVID-19 Leave and Accommodation Request Form and email to FMLA@colorado.edu.
- If you have a medical condition that prevents you from being able to return to work including being defined as high risk as defined by the CDC, please contact ADA Compliance directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please be aware that you may need to provide medical documentation as a part of their process so it is recommended you contact them as soon as possible to ensure they have time to assess your request prior to the return to work date.
- Leave under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may be a resource. Please contact Human Resources at FMLA@colorado.edu to inquire if you would be eligible for FMLA and how FMLA can be used.
- If you are experiencing other concerns or questions about returning to work, the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program is a free and confidential resource for employees, and we encourage you to connect with them to discuss your specific situation and navigate your options.
- In your return to work, it is required that you follow appropriate health and safety protocols, including social distancing, face coverings, and hand-washing/sanitizing. CDC guidelines are available here. Please contact your department HR or Employee Relations with any questions.
- It is the employee’s responsibility to connect with these resources and follow the guidelines above.
Employees who become ill or develop symptoms of COVID-19 are required to:
Notify their supervisor AND
Complete the Health Questionnaire form.
- Stay home and consult with their physician
- Reach out to supervisor or department HR for appropriate leave
- Return to work when one of the appropriate strategies, recommended by the CDC, is complete:
- Time based strategy
- 10 days following symptom onset AND resolution of fever for at least 24 hours without fever-reducers/improvement in other symptoms
- 10 days following first positive PCR test if asymptomatic
- Visit the CDC Information on how to isolate if sick
- Time based strategy
- Employee may be contacted by CU Boulder’s Health & Wellness Public Health Staff or any other Colorado county public health department to complete the contact tracing process. Instructions to isolate or quarantine from any public health department may be different and should be followed.

During this pandemic, information may need to be shared to protect our employees. If there is a positive test reported, the department and all resources will do everything possible to protect the employee’s identity and only those who meet the criteria for close contact will be notified with next steps.
Surveillance testing is not available for anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19. Employees who have symptoms are required to notify their supervisor and should seek a test through their medical provider or other local testing sites.
Surveillance testing involves testing individuals once a week and is intended to detect asymptomatic carriers. This testing is instrumental in ensuring we keep our on-campus community safe and healthy.
Approximately 900 staff and faculty, have been identified for testing based upon their role and work location as part of the surveillance monitoring effort. Criteria for determining which employees are required to test is based upon the following:
- Those at higher-risk of close contact as defined by CDC and campus guidance
- Those who work or live in the residence halls
These identified employees will be notified by their department and are required to submit to weekly saliva tests at the designated testing locations provided by their department A list of all testing locations can be found on the Protect Our Herd site.
In addition, any faculty or staff member can choose to be tested at these locations:
- University Memorial Center (North side near fountain court).
8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday (max 450 tests per day, first-come, first-served).
- SEEC (South entrance at breezeway between SEEC and SEEL).
Noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (max 150 tests per day, first-come, first-served).
Preparing for Your Appointment
- You must bring your Buff OneCard and must avoid eating or drinking anything 30 minutes prior.
- Please complete your Daily Health Questionnaire prior to your appointment if you have not already done so for the day.
- If this is your first time being tested on campus, you will be asked to fill out a consent form.
- Do not go to a testing site if you are experiencing symptoms. If you have symptoms, please contact your Primary Care Physician for further instructions.
After Your Appointment
- After you provide your saliva sample, you may go about your day and continue your job duties and assignments as scheduled.
- Negative results are not communicated. The employee will not receive any notification if the test is negative.
- Positive results are sent to HR. Employees will receive notification the next day via secure email to their Colorado.edu email address with further instructions. These individuals are instructed to follow up with a diagnostic COVID-19 test at Wardenburg or their primary care physician.
