We are pleased to announce that Geological Sciences Professor Emeritus and CIRES Fellow Roger Bilham has received the AGU Charles A. Whitten Medal for 2022! Roger is one of 36 recipients who are receiving AGU’s highest honors for their excellence in scientific research, education, communication, and outreach.
Roger’s research focuses on earthquake, landslide, flood and volcano processes and their impact on society. He employs terrestrial and remote sensing geodetic methods to measure the deformation of the Earth's crust, and engineering and historical investigative methods to quantify the damage they produce. For decades he has developed and deployed low cost instruments to document the slow creep of faults and landslides, and has kept abreast of emerging technologies to record and broadcast that information in real time. His current research includes earthquakes in India and its western margin, and the investigation of aseismic fault slip in Israel, Pakistan, Anatolia and California.
