The Flame Challenge promo piece with photo of Alan AldaWhat is a flame? How would you explain it? Could you explain it in a way a middle school student could learn and understand? Everything began with that question about a flame and each year a group of young students come up with a new question to ask scientists in an international competition! The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science wants to "empower scientists to communicate complex topics in clear, vivid, and engaging ways," according to their website. So far, there have been 7 questions answered, including "what is time?" "what is color?" and "what is sleep?" These questions may seem simple, but once you start trying to explain them, it may be harder than you think! Each year, a winner is crowned by the students and the winning videos are available on YouTube. Search for "The Flame Challenge" and learn about something you may have never thought much about before!
