Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel, “The Martian” is the first on our new ‘Friday Flicks’ movie list! As described by IMDb, the plot is recounted as “an astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.” At Fiske, we love this film because it has so many scientific accuracies, including the orbital dynamics, the Martian soil being able to grow plants, communications with Earth, and more! Of course there’s some Hollywood inaccuracies in there as well, (like the dust storm… the atmosphere on Mars is much too thin to cause any damage like what’s shown in the film) but we still love this flick.
The author of the novel wanted to ensure as many details as possible were true to science, and the filmmakers even consulted with NASA to get aspects of space and space travel to Mars as accurate as possible!
The Martian is available for rent on Amazon Prime, Hulu, YouTube, and more. Don’t forget the popcorn!
