At times, faculty may take on compensated, professional responsibilities in addition to their full-time appointment. Examples of additional jobs include overload teaching, administrative service, consulting duties, etc. However, faculty salary supplementation is limited and regulated by both Federal and University administrative policies. All units are responsible for ensuring that any additional faculty jobs adhere to the policies governing additional compensation.
In most cases, probationary faculty are considered for tenure and promotion at the same time. For faculty starting their appointment at CU Boulder without credit for prior academic experience, the mandatory promotion and tenure review occurs during the seventh year of appointment, and in successful cases, promotion to associate professor and award of tenure occur at the end of the seventh year.
Campus policy delegates to the Provost the responsibility for ensuring that recognition award programs are properly designed and implemented. A recognition award may be granted to recognize extraordinary performance by exempt professional employees and faculty.

The probationary period for an assistant professor starting his/her career without credit for prior professorial experience is seven academic years. The "tenure clock" is the commonly used campus metaphor for the imaginary meter that counts down this probationary period.
