After graduating from architecture school at Yale University, Mr. VanGenderen has pursued a career in the design and management of construction of the built environment. He practiced architecture for several years before managing a small manufacturing company. He then taught computer-aided design for a contract furniture manufacturer in Michigan. 

Returning to Colorado, Mr. VanGenderen practiced urban design and civil engineering for several new urbanist communities in Boulder, Colorado. More recently, he served as a development project manager in the City Manager’s office in Aurora, Colorado, overseeing major commercial and residential developments. Before his appointment to the faculty at ENVD, he taught urban design at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
