This course will provide new graduate students at the masters and doctoral levels with an introduction to the profession of English Studies. We will look at the history of the the academic field of English with particular attention to developments over the last fifty years. Our primary focus will be on the state of English today, including both what kinds of literature the field studies and how it studies those particular texts. We will also look at how English as an academic field fits into higher education more generally and we will survey and study current trends in higher ed. The class will look at employment prospects and options for those who earn an advanced degree in English. Readings will be drawn mostly from the extensive current literature on all these topics and we will try to keep up with breaking news and developments.
