College Orientations & Requirements
The following sessions are mandatory for students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science:
Engineering TA/RA Graduate Student Orientation
To welcome you to the college and help you get to know your fellow graduate students, we have organized a virtual event for all incoming students receiving TA or RA appointments. This mandatory orientation will provide you with information to facilitate your transition into our graduate programs.
- Date: Tuesday, Aug. 22
- Time: 2-3:30 p.m.
- Place: Contact your graduate program advisor for Zoom information
- Questions? Contact Meredith Canode
RA/TA English Speaking Test
The college requires that international students who will be supported on a RA or TA appointment take a brief English speaking test. This will assess how well you will be able to communicate with students and research colleagues at CU Boulder. More information and a sample speaking test can be found on the International English Center website.
- Dates: Aug. 23-25 (pick one session)
- Times: 3-5 p.m.
- Location: Online (Zoom)
Register for the Exam
Once you register, you will receive an email with a confirmed test time and Zoom instructions. You may be asked to take the test on a date after Aug. 19.
If, based on your exam results, the International English Center recommends that you complete U.S. English pronunciation training, the college and your department will pay for you to take Continuing Education course number ESLG 1130: Pronunciation for International Graduate Students. This is a two-credit, 10-week course that meets twice weekly. The college will not pay the tuition for this course if you receive a satisfactory test result but still wish to take the course. No substitute courses will be paid for by the college in lieu of ESLG 1130.
Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Fall Intensive Workshops
All new Engineering RAs and TAs are required to attend at least four CTL Fall Intensive workshops. The CTL also offers opportunities for graduate teacher certification and for professional development certification.
