In 2010, CU was a founding member of the Green Sports Alliance, the leading association for sustainability in the sports industry. With our involvement in the GSA, we are able to share best practices and experience with major sports leagues, clubs, and governing bodies. The GSA exemplifies the power of sports to advance climate action in non-political environments with an emphasis on team work and collective action.
Fan Engagement Playbook: in 2017 RGS students Monica Rowand and Andrew Cahil collaborated with the GSA and hosted 3 day conference at CU to create the Fan Engagement Playbook - the sports industry’s leading guide for organizations who want to engage their fans in positive climate focused education, awareness, and action.
CU was a driving force of the foundation of Pac-12 Team Green, the first conference wide commitment to sustainability in the NCAA. Pac-12 Team Green has created model for sports media sponsorships focused on sustainability and for building a network among competing institutions to share best practices and collectively work toward shared goals and values
CU was the first North American University to sign the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, following the likes of the Golden State Warriors, the NBA, and AEG. This commitment solidifies our view of the importance of collaboration for climate action and the role that sports industry can take in that effort.
The Sport's For Climate Action Framework commits to:
Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility
