The U.S Geological Survey is seeking a student to work as a laboratory assistant at our office in Boulder, CO to assist a project that is assessing how human activities affect biogeochemical processes in Colorado Front Range rivers. The project is run out of the Surface Water Chemistry Laboratory will focus on the interactions between carbon cycling, stream metabolism, and the mobilization of legacy pollutants in sediments.

  • Location: Boulder, Colorado (CU Boulder east campus)  

The laboratory assistant should expect to do the following activities: Regular field sampling; in-situ probe maintenance at sites in the Colorado Front Range; and laboratory analysis of water and sediment samples for concentrations of major ions, alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon, and other constituents. Some data quality control may also be required including calibration, checking for outliers, and creating graphical representations of data.

Applicants should have the following skills: General knowledge of water chemistry, especially of major ions and their expression in surface water samples. Completed at least 1 semester, including laboratory coursework, of college-level chemistry. Student must pay attention to detail, have the ability to follow written and oral directions, and must be reliable, punctual, responsible and able to work independently. Field and laboratory work may require standing or sitting for extended periods of time, walking over uneven terrain, and working in potentially inclement weather conditions. Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and computer languages such as R and Python is a plus.
