As part of the University of Colorado Art Museum biennial Artist-In-Residence Program, artists are invited to CU Boulder to create new work or curate an exhibition. The primary component will be a four to six-week on-site residency in the 2021/2022 academic year. Artists will interact with faculty and students both in-person and remotely to produce an installation or an exhibition curated from the CU Art Museum collection for a 4,000 square foot gallery.
The onsite component of the residency can occur in either the fall semester 2021 or spring semester 2022, depending on the project proposal.
Artists are either:
- In residence in the fall semester 2021 to work toward a finished exhibition or installation in the galleries for the spring 2022,
- In residence in the spring semester 2022 and use the gallery as an experimental laboratory and ever-evolving production space to create an installation. The museum will will be open to the public during gallery hours during this time.
The on-site component will take place if the COVID-19 pandemic has been successfully managed by 2021/2022; if the pandemic continues, the Museum will work with artist/s to develop a remote alternative.
Project proposals can range from:
- Curating an exhibition from the CU Art Museum collection remotely and being onsite for course visits, installation and public presentations
- Producing a new installation to fill our 4,000 square foot gallery
The CU Art Museum is committed to the arts in all their forms. The Museum encourages interdisciplinary projects and values how the methodologies of two or more different disciplines can contribute to new knowledge and creative works. The Museum welcomes applications from individual and collaborative teams of choreographers, dancers, designers, filmmakers, media artists, musicians, visual artists and writers, as well as collaborative teams from the arts paired with scholars in other disciplines such as engineering, humanities, law, or the natural or social sciences. Past resident artists have worked with the Department of Theater and Dance, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Greenhouse, Library Special Collections, Museum of Natural History and Program in Environmental Design, as well as many other artists, scholars and collections on campus.
Applicants should be engaged in contemporary artistic practice and demonstrate a continuing national or international exhibition record. Applicants must by external to the University of Colorado system.
The following support is provided to artists invited to create an installation under the CU Art Museum Artist-in-Residence Program:
- $16,000 payment.
Travel to and from Boulder, lodging and other expenses are not included and will be the responsibility of the successful applicant. The payment will be in two installations with $8,000 upon signing the contract and $8,000 upon completion of services. If collaborative teams apply, the lump-sum payment and materials budget will be shared between its members. If the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Museum will work with artists to develop a remote alternative. Support will be reduced by $5,500 to $10,500 to account for the lack of travel, lodging and other expenses.
- Up to $2,500 for materials, equipment, framing and transportation of artwork (budget must be submitted and approved in advance).
- Support to identify and secure installation materials.
- Facilitate relationships and access to CU Art Museum collection items.
- Skilled labor during the installation process.
- Standard exhibition marketing and publicity.
- Standard photographic documentation of installation (does not include video documentation).
- Total budget: $18,500.
- A six-week residency, supervision of installation (if applicable) with a minimum of four weeks onsite to be negotiated based on project.
- Project must be flexible to adapt to remote modality, if needed.
- Ability to complete remote work (planning, production and virtual meetings) prior to the onsite residency.
- One public lecture.
- Attendance at a meet-and-greet with university and surrounding communities.
- Involvement of faculty and students from two or more courses in the creation of artwork, exhibition or workshop(s).
- Community engagement (e.g. workshop, involvement in creation of artwork).
- Realization of the proposed exhibition or installation for a 4,000 square foot gallery.
Application portal opens November 1, 2020. The CU Art Museum Artist-In-Residence Program process uses Submittable. Application requirements include:
- Artist-in-Residence Program proposal, no more than two pages (double spaces in 12-point font) communicating your interdisciplinary approach to working with CU Boulder resources. Please discuss how you will collaborate with campus and external constituents to create new work.*
- Cover letter, no more than one page.
- Work samples may include audio, image and video files.
- Resume of no more than two pages.
- List of two references with contact information.
*The museum will not allow works that create facility damage, pose a risk to conservation or pest management, or are a threat to human safety. While we do not censor work based on content, there may be a need for signage alerting visitors to the presence of certain imagery, themes or materials. Applicants will only have access to the museum during our operational hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All work will be exhibition-specific based on facility limitations, staff capacities and the timeline and scope for exhibition preparation, loans, transportation and installation. Projects need to be adapted to fit these parameters or they will not be approved.

The CU Art Museum Artist-in-Residence Program is selected by a Selection Committee of museum staff, CU Boulder faculty and a community representative. The museum welcomes applications from artists and teams external to the University of Colorado system.
The Selection Committee will take into account:
- Artistic Excellence
- Campus involvement
- Utilizing campus resources to further the artist’s intellectual and creative inquiry
- Evidence of experimentation
- Evidence of experience with remote instruction and/or work
- Ability to adapt the project to a remote modality, if needed
- Alignment with university and art museum mission/vision
