Mya Bethune
PhD

Mya became a senior staff member of CAPS in 2012. She first joined CAPS in 2008 as an Advanced Practicum Student and then returned to complete a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 2011. Mya received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Colorado- Boulder (1996) and her Masters in Counseling Psychology from the University of Colorado-Denver (2002). She then went on to earn her PhD. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 2011. Over the past 10 years, she has conducted therapy in a variety of settings including university counseling centers, middle & high schools, adolescent residential treatment centers and community mental health centers.
 
Mya’s approach to therapy is straightforward and based on building on an individual’s strengths as a support with which to overcome challenges rather than focusing on "problems." Therapy is aimed at assisting people reach their goals and time is spent developing the necessary skills to cultivate confidence and self-acceptance. She is committed to creating a strong therapeutic relationship built on respect and trust so that it is comfortable to explore the complexities of  circumstances and concerns. Mya believes that therapy is a collaborative process that can increase well-being, improve relationships and empower changes in behavior.

Areas of interest

Mya works with a variety of issues and clients, but her areas of special interest include depression, life transitions, relationship issues, grief & loss, stress management/wellness, self-esteem and eating disorders/weight management concerns.
