Hunter was raised in San Diego, California. He received his doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado and completed his doctoral internship here at CU Boulder's Counseling and Psychiatric Services. Prior to joining CAPS, Hunter also provided services for UNC’s McNair Scholars Program, engaging in impactful therapeutic work with students who hold first-generation, low-income and underrepresented identities. As a generalist practitioner with experience in group and family therapy, he has a strong passion for individual counseling with emerging adults. He has experience working in numerous university counseling centers within the state, including UNC, CU Boulder and CSU in Fort Collins.

Hunter uses an integrative approach to therapy while applying a strengths-based, multicultural lens to best align with student needs and incorporate the cultural contexts of their experiences. He is committed to the creation of a strong and authentic therapeutic relationship through which students can experience the trust and support necessary to access their strengths, and cultivate self-compassion. He is passionate about using therapy to foster self-trust, agency and empowerment in the face of adversity and complex societal systems.
