CU Boulder follows a strict policy to ensure that university records are retained and disposed of in accordance with Federal and State laws. APS 2006 - Retention of University Records establishes the university's principles and processes for the retention and disposal of all university records.

An overview of policy highlights is available in the Records Retention Presentation (Nov 2016).

Departments should identify records that qualify for disposal as specified in the University of Colorado Boulder Records Retention Schedule.

When records are disposed of, departments are required to complete a Records Disposition Log after disposal and send the electronic form to the Campus Controller's Office per the instructions on the form. Disposal of electronic records must also be recorded according to the State. The log is used to complete a mandatory annual report to the State Archivist.
