Commencement represents the official conferral of the earned academic degrees upon both undergraduate and graduate students. The University of Colorado Boulder publicly acknowledges the students’ significant educational achievements and accomplishments, and encourages the continued pursuit of education and personal realization.

Commencement is the ceremonial fulfillment of the university’s mission on the advancement of knowledge, and is the initiation of the students into the fellowship of this university. It is a time of celebration and reflection for students, families, friends, faculty, and staff – during which the university strives to create a memorable and meaningful occasion in a chapter of the lives of students and those who support them.

Many traditions are a part of our commencement, including Academic Dress, display of the University of Colorado Mace and the Presidential Chain of Office, use of the University Seal, the reading of the Norlin Charge, and signing of the Alma Mater.
