NPR News correspondent Kirk Siegler (Jour’00) was selected for the inaugural United Nations Foundation Thomas Lovejoy Press Fellowship to report on deforestation in the Amazon. Selected out of more than 1,000 applicants, he was one of 10 international journalists selected to travel to Camp 41 and Manaus, Brazil, in the fall of 2022. Kirk lives in Boise, Idaho.

Boulder-based writer Jenny Shank (MEngl) won the George Garrett Fiction Prize for her story collection Mixed Company. The collection will be published by Texas Review Press in October. The stories draw on Jenny’s experiences as a music critic, intern with the Colorado Rockies, intern with a concert promoter, tutor for CU football and mentor, as well as her experience attending Denver Public Schools during the era of court-ordered busing for racial integration.

Denys Van Renen (AeroEngr, CompSci; Engl’04) published three books, The Other Exchange: Women, Servants, and the Urban Underclass in Early Modern English Literature (2017); Nature and the New Science in England, 1665- 1726 (2018); and Beyond 1776: Globalizing the Cultures of the American Revolution (2018). Denys is an associate professor at the University of Nebraska, where he specializes in 18th-century British literature and representations of water, air and atmosphere.

Jazz saxophonist Tia Fuller’s (MMus’00) new album “Diamond Cut” was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category. She spoke at the College of Music commencement in 2018 as a Distinguished Alumni Award winner. Fuller has been featured on the cover of Saxophone Today, Jazz Education Journal and JazzTimes Magazine and has received numerous other awards, including winning the Downbeat Critics Poll “Rising Star” award two years running. She has toured with Beyoncé and performed at the White House. She teaches full time at Berklee College of Music in Boston

Sara Alan’s (PolSci) debut young adult novel, A Messy, Beautiful Life, was released by Entangled Teen in October. The story is inspired by Sara’s personal experience with a rare bone cancer in her twenties. She also is half of the comedy duo The Novelistas, which performs about writing and teaches performance to writers. Sara lives in Colorado with her husband and daughter.

In August, Vail Resorts named Chicago native Taylor Ogilvie (Hist), currently the general manager of Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin, as the new vice president of the company’s urban ski areas. In addition to overseeing Afton Alps in Minnesota and Mt. Brighton in Michigan, he will continue working as the general manager at Wilmot Mountain.
