Tim Hutchings is a sociologist of digital religion and a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University, where he is involved in the Existential Terrains research project. This research project examines death and mourning in online contexts. His previous work at CODEC Research Centre for Digital Theology at St. John’s College, Durham University assisted local communities in developing a contemporary, digitally-supported pilgrimage route from Durham to Lindisfarne, inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels. For his PhD research, he completed an ethnographic study of five online churches, exploring new forms of worship, authority and community emerging on the internet. His research focuses on how Christians use new media, including religious recruitment and disaffiliation, digital art, death and mourning, and the Bible as a digital text.
