Janet Ruppert is a PhD student in Information Science working to increase tech literacy for kids and families in an accessible and playful way. Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, she joined Dr. Ricarose Roque’s lab after receiving her bachelor’s in Management Information Systems from the University of Alabama, where she studied the design and use of large-scale, distributed information systems. She became interested in creative group project-based computer science education through her work founding and facilitating the Tuscaloosa Girls Who Code club.
She believes that everyone is capable of understanding how digital products and platforms work and the privacy rights and surveillance threats associated with that infrastructure. For her, promoting that understanding is an important step to allow individuals to decide for themselves how to navigate digital spaces in a way that makes them comfortable. Other interests include yoga, science fiction and politics.
