Blake Hallinan is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication under the advisement of Ted Striphas. Blake's dissertation, Like! Feelings and Friendship in the Age of Algorithms, is an ethnography of the Like button that employs methods from history, political economy, interviews, and strategic foresight. Together, the dissertation argues that the Like button and algorithmic feeds introduce dynamics from the production cultures of mass media into social interaction, changing how people relate to each other—and to the platforms that enable and constrain those relationships.
