Community and social life

Starting to meet people

A great way to start connecting at CU is going to our LGBTQ+ and transgender-specific events, Out Boulder events or other happenings in the LGBTQ+ community. You can also drop by our office (C4C N320) and chat with Morgan Seamont, who is trans and loves to welcome new folks to the community.

Some other great off-campus resources to start expanding your social circles include:

Social organizations and non-LGBTQ+ specific student life

Greek life

Trans-identifying and transitioning students can be found in all areas of campus, including Greek life. While there is no known statistical information on trans students in Greek life, there are several options available to those wishing to pursue this aspect of college life.

Religion/spirituality

These student ministries and organizations have indicated they are LGBTQ+ affirming or otherwise supportive of LGBTQ+ folks. While these organizations have taken steps to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ people, they might not have direct experience with trans-identifying or transitioning folks. This list is not to say that other organizations are not inclusive, rather that only these ones explicitly expressed interest in being included in this guide.

On-campus employment and work-study

Being out and working on-campus

You are fully protected by CU’s non-discrimination policy, which covers gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation among other protected classes.

Friendly places to work

Levels of friendliness are highly relative, personal and subjective, and therefore look differently to different people. If finding an on-campus employer with knowledge of trans issues is a priority for you, there are many individuals on campus who have gone through Safe Zone Training and have joined the Safe Zone Ally Network. These individuals may display their Safe Zone Ally Network Member signs as an indicator that they have completed this training and have pledged their commitment to supporting LGBTQ people. However, safety or in-depth knowledge of trans issues is not guaranteed, as learning is a continual process and does not stop with one training.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns on this matter. Remember that should you ever feel discriminated against in your workplace, there are safe and understanding options to report discrimination and harassment.

Athletics and the Rec Center

Participating in CU athletics

The Rec Center provides guidelines for transgender athletes in intramural and club sports, but you can also contact the Sport Clubs directly via email or phone (303-492-5274).

Locker rooms

There are several single room private bathrooms, changing rooms and shower rooms. Three are located by the pool locker rooms, each with a toilet, shower and sink. Lockers are located just outside of these rooms and are available to rent/use. Contact the Rec Center for more information.
