Mission Statement

The Center for Humanities and the Arts

  • serves as a nexus for humanistic scholarship and artistic creation within the College of Arts and Sciences, and across the Boulder campus;
  • promotes critical reflection on and exploration of the significance of humanities and the arts for the CU community, the state of Colorado, and the world at large;
  • encourages discourse among humanists, artists, and other UCB academics.

Administrative Structure

CHA is administered by a Director and by a Steering Committee comprised of UCB faculty. In addition to the Director, CHA is staffed by a full-time Program Assistant and by a half-time Administrative Assistant.

Funding is provided by the Provost, the Graduate School, the College of Arts and Sciences, and by various endowments.


1-Center Director

The Center Director, who may be rostered in a UCB unit other than in the College of Arts and Sciences, is chosen for a four-year term by a committee appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School. The Director reports to the Dean of the Graduate School, who will submit an annual evaluation of the director’s performance of administrative duties for CHA to the Director’s home department/unit. The appointment is renewable after a successful review by a committee appointed by the Dean.

An Interim Director will be appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School, in consultation with the CHA Steering Committee, in the event the Director is on leave, or if necessary during the period when a search is being conducted for a new permanent Director.

Duties of the Director include:

  • Working closely with the Program Assistant to review budgetary matters and to run day-to-day affairs of the Center.
  • Co-chairing (with the Dean of the Graduate School) the Graduate Committee on the Arts and Humanities (GCAH), a committee that grants research/creative work, special project, and/or visiting scholar awards to campus faculty.
  • Chairing the committee that awards CHA’s A&S Fellowships and Thomas Edwin Devaney Fellowships to incoming graduate students. The Director also co-chairs the committee, with the Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences, the committee to determine Thomas Edwin Devaney Dissertation Fellowships.
  • Calling a plenary session of the Steering Committee at least once every semester. He/she serves as a voting member on all Steering Committee subcommittees: Eaton, Fellowships, and Barnes.
  • Organizing CHA conferences, colloquia, and other programming, in consultation with the Steering Committee.
  • Facilitating the annual CHA seminar, organized around an annual theme.
  • Presenting an annual report of CHA activities to the Dean of the Graduate School and to the Vice Chancellor for Research.
  • Working on fundraising for the Center with the CU Foundation.

2-Steering Committee

  • CHA’s Steering Committee is composed of twelve UCB faculty members who are nominated by their department/unit chairs. Members serve a three-year term. Terms are staggered for the sake of continuity. At least ten members will be from traditional humanities and arts departments, and at least one member will be from a unit other than in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Not all arts/humanities departments can be represented on the Steering Committee at any given time. Accordingly, every effort will be made to insure that all departments/units and schools are represented on a periodic, rotating basis.
  • In the event that a Steering Committee member is on leave, the chairperson of that faculty member’s department/unit will be asked to name a faculty member to substitute for the one on leave.
  • The Steering Committee meets in plenary session at least once each semester to discuss policy and programming issues and opportunities. Proposals must receive a majority of votes to win approval, with a quorum consisting of at least one-half of all Steering Committee members. Email voting is permissible.
  • At the first plenary session every fall, the Steering Committee selects the CHA theme for the following academic year.
  • The Steering Committee traditionally divides itself into subcommittees to address various annual duties. However, any member of the Steering Committee is welcome to serve on all subcommittees.
  • Steering Committee members serve as liaisons between their home departments and/or units and CHA.
  • Steering Committee members are expected to participate whenever possible in major CHA programming.

CHA Subcommittees

  • Eaton: The Steering Committee will select at least four of its members to review and determine Eaton prizes, including Graduate Student Travel Grants.
  • Fellowships: Steering Committee members will select at least four of its members to review applications to the CHA Seminar for the following year, and to select six (6) faculty members and three (3) graduate students to participate in the seminar.
  • Barnes: Steering Committee members will select at least four of its members to determine policies regarding the Hazel Barnes estate, and to determine faculty travel grants to the United Kingdom for research purposes. (This subcommittee may be eliminated, pending a decision on which unit is responsible for overseeing use of the Barnes London property, once it has been leased.)

Procedures for Soliciting Feedback on Major CHA Activities

At the end of each spring semester, the Director will solicit feedback from constituents on programming for the academic year that is coming to a close. Constituents include chairs of Arts/Humanities departments, Associate Dean for Arts and Humanities, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean of the Graduate School, Steering Committee members, External Advisory Committee members, and Deans of other UCB units.

The feedback document will include specific questions, along with a place for general observations, criticism, and/or recommendations.

Feedback may be anonymous, although knowledge of the unit and/or discipline of the person offering feedback may be helpful in making the best use of that feedback.

Feedback will be reviewed by members of the Steering Committee and the Director. The Steering Committee will select a member to summarize feedback and to submit that summary to the Dean of the Graduate School, the Associate Dean for Arts and /Humanities, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Accompanying the feedback document will be The CHA Reporter, providing a review of CHA activities and programming for the academic year.
