
John Harner is Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He received his Ph.D. from the Arizona State University in 1996. His research interests focus on American urban landscapes; cultural, economic, and social connections between the United States and Mexico; and the historical geography of Colorado Springs. His work in Mexico has focused on place identity in Sonoran mining towns; urban changes in housing, jobs, and accessibility to food markets in Guadalajara; pathways of migration; and cultural connections with the U.S. Southwest seen through rustic furniture production. In Colorado he has published on participatory mapping using GIS for Browns Canyon National Monument, land use change in La Plata County, and urban environmental justice indices. His work in Colorado Springs has contributed to a digital humanities exhibit at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum entitled “The Story of Us” (see www.cspmstoryofus.com); sustainability and urban design; and he is working on a book on the historical geography of the city. He received the CU Thomas Jefferson Award in 2018.
