I have not had any experiences with international travel or study abroad programs, but I would love to participate in one. I believe it would be one of the best possible ways to really see the living situations of people in other countries, especially ones that are directly facing the most severe consequences of issues such as climate change and poverty. One of my teachers has spent lots of time abroad with Nyaka Global, a foundation that supports children who were orphaned due to their parents having AIDS/HIV, and he has made it very clear that it is one of the most personally satisfying experiences he ever had. From helping install solar panels to power a schoolhouse to listening to the stories of disenfranchised people, traveling abroad seems to be a fantastic way to gain insight on others’ daily circumstances.
I want to live down the hall from a person who is creative, open-minded, and passionate about making the world a better place. This person would be someone who likes to collaborate and learn with others. They would be passionate about striving towards an equitable world by using science and technology to innovate accessible basic resources for all humans, not just those in the most developed countries. I want to live in a community where our room doors are left open so we can converse with each other, whether it be about climate change, finals, or what we’re getting for lunch.
I have wanted to do some sort of engineering for as long as I can remember. For much of my life, my goal was to work for NASA as an aerospace engineer and build rockets and technology for space travel and exploration. However, in the past couple of years, I have become significantly more aware of humanity’s impact on our planet, and equally as important, on each other. Focusing on the human aspect of engineering is just as important as the scientific and technical aspects because, in the end, it is for people. In the Global Engineering RAP, I will be able to hone in on my ability to see the world from multiple perspectives, not just the scientific one.
This past academic year has had a significant influence on my interest in global engineering. I am taking AP Human Geography and AP Environmental Science, and these classes emphasize the impacts of our actions on each other and the planet. Learning about things like the severe effects of heightened atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and our reliance on the corporatized food industry has helped me realize that the extent of all of this goes far beyond what I originally imagined. I want to be a part of the change to a more sustainable and equitable future and believe that the Global Engineering RAP will be a fantastic jumping stone for my education and personal development.
Living in the Global Engineering RAP would not only be an incredibly useful resource for my education, but a place where I can be myself. I love to talk about technology and social issues, and how we can use engineering and technology to help improve the world. I am very passionate about ensuring a healthy planet for future generations in all regions, and would bring that flame every day to class and in the dorm. I plan to start dialogues about injustices that plague our societies and how we can try to improve them with engineering solutions.
This community will help me continue to explore and learn more about how we can use engineering specifically to provide equitable resources for everyone throughout the world, especially with the effects of climate change further worsening the quality of life of people living in many regions of the world. I believe that technological advances are just as important as the political and socioeconomic factors that decide which resources go where, and can go hand in hand with their developments. Engineers are some of the key influencers in making sure everyone has access to food, clean water, shelter, and electricity. The Global Engineering RAP will help me be part of the fight towards equity around the world.
Being a member of this community would be one of the best steps towards achieving my own personal success and helping the rest of the world. It aligns perfectly with my thoughts and future plans. Living here would be a perfect space for the next stage of my life, and I look forward to being in a community of like-minded people.
