Over three years after the UK’s Brexit referendum and two years after the start of the withdrawal negotiations, it looks increasingly likely that the UK will leave the EU at the end of October without an agreement. How is it possible that after many months of intensive negotiations, resulting in a nearly 600 pages long Withdrawal Agreement, the UK now seem set to crash out of the EU in a disorderly fashion, a scenario that bears huge risks for both the UK and the EU? In his talk, Thomas Lieflaender, a legal adviser in the European Commission’s Brexit negotiation team, will attempt to provide a narrative, explaining the genesis and logic of the respective negotiating positions, elucidating the strategic choices on both sides, and providing some first-hand insights into the dynamics inside the negotiation room. Free pizza and drinks will be served. Space is limited so please register here.
