Ryan's primary research interest is in pushing the state of the art of small satellites so that they can serve as cost-effective alternatives to traditional satellites for a wide range of remote sensing, communication, and navigation missions.  Ryan holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from MIT as well as a BS Electrical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  After graduate school, Ryan spent four years at Planet Labs where he was instrumental in the design, manufacturing, and on-orbit operations of the largest commercial satellite constellation flown to date (300+ cubesats).  He was instrumental in the first gigabit-per-second X-band downlink from a cubesat.  His primary technical expertise is in avionics design (software, hardware and FPGA), communication systems, and navigation systems.  In his spare time, he enjoys traveling the world and has visited seven continents, all 50 US states, and 75 countries.
