Keith Tauscher designs software for analysis of global 21-cm signal experiments, which focus on measuring the early universe, sky-averaged emission from Hydrogen's hyperfine spin-flip line, which has been redshifted to frequencies below 200 MHz. This signal traces the history of the hydrogen gas in the universe less than 1 billion years after the big bang. The main challenge to these experiments is separating the signal from the very large contaminating foreground component composed of synchrotron radiation from electrons spiraling around magnetic field lines inside our galaxy. Keith also works with Professor Jack Burns on space mission concepts like the Dark Ages Polarimeter PathfindER (DAPPER), providing forecasts on their ability to measure the 21-cm signal in the presence of foregrounds.
