The FLATS is taken by CU-Boulder students who wish to be exempt from the 3-semester College of Arts & Sciences foreign language requirement. (The College of Engineering and Applied Science and the Leeds School of Business may also accept this test.) All foreign language testing is now done through FLATS.

There are 56 language FLATS available by special order through Brigham Young University (BYU). Once the tester has completed the exam, tests are sent back to BYU for grading. A final exemption as pass or fail will be sent to CU four to six weeks after the test is taken. No credit hours are granted by taking these tests. NOTE: This test is not to be confused with the placement exam, which is mandatory for all freshmen and transfer students related to course registration. FLATS exemption language tests cannot be used for placement purposes, nor can the placement exams be used for exemption purposes.

New Students: For more information on foreign language PLACEMENT exams, contact New Student and Family Programs at 303-492-4431.

All other students: Please contact individual foreign language departments directly.

The FLATS will be given by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call 303-735-2044.

Test fees for FLATs are $50 (to order from BYU) + $35 (to administer) = $85.

Information forms for the FLATS can be picked up at Testing Services, University of Colorado Boulder East Campus RL2 Building (1540 30th Street, Boulder, CO) Room 26 or requested by email from testing@colorado.edu.

We also offer ALL CLEP exams (for non-CU students) for credit at other schools.

CLEP tests are computer-based and timed for 90 minutes each.

Testing is available year round by INDIVIDUAL APPOINTMENT Tuesday through Thursday; days and times vary. Please call 303-735-2044 at least one week in advance of the day you wish to test. Be prepared to give your name, phone number and the exact title of the CLEP test you have registered for. You can register for your test at clep.collegeboard.org through MY ACCOUNT.

Fee cost for the test will be $85 to College Board and $35 to Testing Services for the proctoring.

The Written Communication exam is given to students who wish to be exempted from the College of Arts and Sciences Core Upper Division requirement in Written Communication. The tester must be a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the lower division Written Communication requirement must already have been fulfilled.

The exam is timed for 90 minutes and requires the student to write a multi-paragraph essay including both argumentative and analytical writing. The student may pick up a handout on "Writing and Form" prior to the exam at the Program for Writing and Rhetoric office in the Environmental Design building (ENVD), room 1B60.

Exams are graded on an exempt/not exempt basis with all decisions final. Essays are not returned, nor is feedback given about any deficiencies of the essay. A designation "not exempt" means that two writing professionals believe the student would benefit from an upper division writing class. Students may take the exam no more than twice. Test results are available approximately two weeks after the exam.
