Job Search Seminars for Graduate Students and Postdocs

Industry Job Search Seminar Series

This seminar is presented once each semester and is intended for first- and second-year master’s students and doctoral students in their second and subsequent years, whether you are intending to move into industry or just want to keep your options open. Each session includes content presentation, resources and an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Week 1: Average search and hiring timelines, how to look for opportunities and how to identify vital information when reading a job posting.

Week 2: Guidance in representing your skills and experience on an industry resume as well as advice for setting up your LinkedIn profile.

Week 3: Concrete advice on drafting and tailoring industry cover letters and obtaining professional references.

Week 4: How to prepare and practice for your interview, what kinds of questions to expect and how to negotiate salary.

Academic Job Search Seminar Series

This four-week virtual seminar is aimed at third- or fourth-year graduate students who are planning to be on the academic job market this application cycle or next, or early-career graduate students who want a thorough understanding of what comprises the academic job dossier. Grad students are encouraged to attend all four sessions as each week builds upon the last, but each week’s educational content portion may be attended as a standalone workshop.

Week 1: How to formulate an application plan, research your target institution, request letters that will support your applications and more.

Week 2: Building an effective CV. How to write and lay-out the basic eight sections and possible additional sections to include.

Week 3: What information to include in the job letter and how to tailor it. How to write a diversity statement, including starting points and addressing specific diversity concerns.

Week 4: How to structure research and teaching statements, what to include and some starting points. Plus, the five questions of the standard academic interview.
