Why Barney Ford?
The fellowship fund is named after Barney L. Ford (1822-1902), leading Denver citizen and pioneer of free enterprise in the American West. A former slave from South Carolina, Barney escaped at age seventeen, taught himself how to read and write and achieved great business success, becoming the most noted caterer and restaurateur in the Rocky Mountain region. Mr. Barney Ford was also very active in civic and educational causes. The Barney Ford Diversity Benefit is our way of establishing a tradition that serves to carry on his legacy.
This event, organized by MBA students in support of MBA students, brings together MBA alumni, faculty and staff, current MBA students, and friends—all with the common goal of increasing scholarship funds for students. Proceeds help fund student fellowships, with the overall goal of building diversity into the MBA program and contributing to the strong sense of community we work hard to achieve. The event’s namesake, Barney Ford, was a successful businessman in Colorado, who was also very active in civic and educational causes. The Barney Ford Diversity Benefit is our way of establishing a tradition that serves to carry on his legacy.
